While all y’all (yes, that’s proper talk down here), are freezin’ up North, I’m enjoying a balmy 16C down here in Memphis, Tennessee.
And while all y’all are stuffing yourselves with leftover turkey, I’m at the Blues City Cafe getting my fill of barbecue–real barbecue, southern style–because when you’re in Memphis, you gotta Put Some “South” In Your Mouth! (Love the quotation marks. Is “South” supposed to mean something else?)
Here’s a taste of what we’ve had to put in our mouths on this trip so far…I’ll give more details when we return:
From The Pig on Beale (Street)
Pork, pork, and more pork…
and from the legendary Germantown Commissary
Just to change things up: southern fried chicken from Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken…
and more fried chicken and black eyed peas from the Fourway Restaurant on Mississppi Boulevard where Martin Luther King Jr. used to stop in for lunch…
Of course we had to go to the Arcade Restaurant for Elvis Presley’s favourite, fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches….
We haven’t had vegetables for four days, unless you count the fried green tomatoes and the deep fried pickles.
Tonight, hopefully that will change. We’re going to McEwen’s on Monroe for New Year’s Eve dinner, so stay tuned.
But for now, Happy New Year Y’all!
